Big Virgil van Dijk update tonight from transfer expert

Liverpool are desperate to agree a new contract with Virgil van Dijk amid growing speculation over his long-term future at Anfield.

This is according to former Man United, Aston Villa and Tottenham scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the club will “bend over backwards” to get a deal over the line.

The Dutch superstar has been the subject of intense speculation since the summer when he refused to confirm whether his future would be with Liverpool.

As things stand, the 33-year-old will be out of contract at the end of the season with less than a year remaining on his current terms with Liverpool.

This would allow him to entertain talks over a move away from Anfield from January onwards, but the Reds are determined to tie him down before that becomes a possibility.

Van Dijk remains a crucial part of Arne Slot’s plans for the future and has already played a key role in the boss’ fast start to life in the Premier League.

Brown has explained that the club have assessed their options and will have determined that their best option will be to keep their star man rather than spend big on a replacement given the lack of options at his level.

Football Insider revealed on 7 October that Van Dijk wants to stay at Liverpool despite the uncertainty, in a huge boost to a potential breakthrough in talks.

Now, Brown, who has worked with top players and agents in the past including for over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted that the club would be pushing to agree terms over a new deal.

“I’ve heard they’re desperate for him to sign,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s got this all-conquering reputation and he’s seen as one of, if not, the best defender in the world, and he’s playing in a side that wants to win things.

“Much will depend on how they perform this season, and they have started strongly.

“They’ll be looking at it and assessing whether they can improve on where they are now.

“If he leaves, Liverpool aren’t going to be able to get anybody who’s anywhere near as good as him.

“Liverpool can’t afford to lose him because they’ll face serious questions about their ambition and losing their best players.
