Newcastle manager Eddie Howe needs to come up with a solution for their striker conundrum after Anthony Gordon failed to impress against his former side Everton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland international Frank McAvennie believes the 23-year-old isn’t a natural number nine after being used as a make-shift striker in their 0-0 Premier League draw with Everton on Saturday (October 5).
With Isak, 25, and Wilson, 32, both ruled out until at least the end of October due to a toe injury and a back injury, respectively, Newcastle have only managed to score eight Premier League goals so far this season.
Their injuries leave Eddie Howe’s side without a recognised number nine ahead of important Premier League fixtures against Brighton and Chelsea.
Newcastle need to change Anthony Gordon role
Gordon was denied from the penalty spot by Jordan Pickford in their 0-0 draw against former club Everton, much to the delight of the Goodison Park crowd.
Before moving into the number nine postion, the England international had a starting role on the left-wing, scoring twice in nine appearances across all competitions.
“I’m not a fan of it”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“Taking it away from Anthony Gordon, you couldn’t write the script, I’d have bet money that Anthony Gordon was going to miss a penalty against Everton because that’s where he came from.
“They were giving him dog’s abuse, they were giving him so much stick and he went and missed the penalty.
“He’s not a nine, he’s definitely not a nine, or a false-nine, whatever you want to call it, he’s not an out-and-out striker.
“He’s better coming in and running at you, it’s a strange one.”
