Stefan Borson: Man United face devastating cuts next year after £100m blow

Man United will have to cut back on spending if they don’t return to the Champions League for the 2025-26 campaign.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that devastating changes to spending will be necessary if they don’t return to Europe’s premier club competition.

Man United will play Europa League football this term and are favourites to lift the trophy next year.

Borson has already told Football Insider (8 September) that Man United will have a £100million hole in this season’s accounts after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag managed qualification in his first season at Old Trafford but is under pressure after picking up just three points from a possible nine to start the 2024-25 campaign.

Ratcliffe will have to make Man United cuts without top-four finish, says Borson

Borson claimed cuts will have to come at the top despite Man United being “very accomplished on the commercial side” and “outperforming their rivals” in that regard.

He told Football Insider: “Even if they win the Europa League, it’s still going to be worth nowhere near £100million.

“It’s not an easy trophy to win.

“Like Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham – United need to be in the Champions League.

“More than most clubs, United’s cost base assumes they are playing Champions League football.

“If they can’t get back in, they will have to start cutting back on spending.

“They won’t be able to, even though they’re a huge club and continue to outperform their rivals on the commercial side, continue spending like this.

“They’re very accomplished on the commercial side and have great brand appeal.

“But Champions League TV and prize money is very substantial and they have to have it.”
