Everton’s disappointing start to the new season could have a negative impact on Farhad Moshiri’s ability to sell the club, sources have told Football Insider.
The Merseyside giants find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after losing all three of their opening games.
Their latest outing saw them throw a two-goal lead away against Bournemouth, who scored three times in a matter of minutes to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory at Goodison Park.
Moshiri is still looking to secure a takeover after 777 Partners’s deal collapsed and The Friedkin Group pulled out of talks in recent months.
John Textor was granted a period of exclusivity on 15 August to buy the Everton owner’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison.
But one complication is the 58-year-old’s 45-per-cent stake in Crystal Palace, with Premier League rules forbidding ownership of two clubs in the same division.
Despite The Guardian reporting on 21 August the American billionaire had jetted into Liverpool to hold further talks with Moshiri, there has been no official update on where the takeover deal is currently at over the past few weeks.
Sources have told Football Insider Everton’s performances on the pitch won’t be helping the negotiations as the two parties look to strike a deal.
Everton results could have negative impact on takeover deal
Sean Dyche managed to guide his side to safety last season despite the club being charged with two profit and sustainability (PSR) breaches, resulting in them being docked eight points overall.
Although the new campaign only got underway last month, Everton’s current league position suggests they could be involved in another relegation battle again this season.
Sources have told Football Insider the threat of relegation will be a concern for any potential buyers as it would dramatically alter the value of the club.
After speaking to several people involved with the Merseysiders, journalist Matt Slater told The Athletic FC Podcast on 4 September there isn’t currently anything happening on the takeover front.
Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider he is surprised at how relaxed Moshiri appears to be about the takeover situation after so far failing to complete a deal.
In other news, Dyche sack update emerges from Everton as Textor ‘lines up replacement’.
