Rangers could have reduced their title chances “to ashes” if several incidents against Hibernian had gone the other way, according to Bill Leckie.
Writing in The Scottish Sun (29 September), Leckie warned the Bears against “playing with fire” after their 1-0 win at Ibrox, which saw Jack Butland save a controversial penalty given against John Souttar.
Leckie highlighted the extremely poor Mykola Kuharevich effort from 12 yards which Butland kept out, as well as the marginal offside decision which went in the Gers’ favour for Tom Lawrence’s first-half winner.
He said; “(Rangers) were playing with fire too and could so easily have reduced their title chances to ashes.
“They simply can’t afford one more slip-up in the Premiership or they’ll be needing snookers.”
Good results must lead to better performances for Rangers
For all Leckie’s worries and tribulations about the Gers’ narrow victory over Hibernian, it was their fourth win in a row without conceding a goal across all competitions.
There are certainly worse signs for a club that intends to compete on all possible fronts this season, with the victories coming in the Premiership, Scottish League Cup, and Europa League respectively.
However, while it’s true that the Light Blues’ 1-0 win on their league return to Ibrox was laboured, it’s also evident that the task to overtake Celtic remains absolutely massive.
The Old Firm rivals are six for six in the league with a goal difference of plus 20, and before Clement’s winning run, had re-affirmed who currently rules the roost in Glasgow with a 3-0 win at Parkhead.
Beating Celtic remains the ultimate goal for the Belgian’s new-look crop of Rangers hopefuls, but if their current form holds into the new year, Clement will be confident that he can change the narrative.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement got animated after the win v Hibernian as he defended one player’s controversial moment.
