Michael Stewart has insisted that VAR made the right decision to allow Cyriel Dessers’ goal in Rangers’ 2-0 win against St Johnstone on Saturday 17 August.

The Nigerian was initially adjudged to have fouled Jack Sanders before scoring, with the whistle adjudged to have gone too, but the goal was given.

Stewart believes that VAR bailed out Matthew MacDermid after his decision was made too early, saying he made a mess of it all.

Speaking live on Premier Sports coverage of the clash, Stewart could not believe what he was watching despite the right decision being made.

“This is bizarre,” he said.

“If you see a free-kick, you don’t wait to allow the game to be played out, a free-kick then you blow your whistle. You don’t wait.

“It’s a mistake from the officials, and as far as I’m concerned, you can understand why the St Johnstone players are unhappy and they are miffed, but effectively, it is the right decision.

“Cyriel Dessers did not foul Jack Sanders and the goal should have been allowed. The referee has made a mess of it and the VAR officials have tried to give him a get-out.”

Rangers controversy v St Johnstone at Hampden Park

This is going to be a huge talking point for many days to come.

In the end, Philippe Clement will not care and will only concentrate on his side going through in the Scottish League Cup after a poor week.

It is said that the whistle went just after the ball went in the net, but that has been contested widely already with St Johnstone players raging.

It was Dessers again who found the back of the net, in a week where he reacted to the fans against Dynamo Kyiv after being jeered again.

Alasdair Lamont labelled the sequence of play as “Astonishing” live on BBC Sportsound on 17 August, and Willie Collum will likely be questioned after the game after he pushed hard to solve issues over the summer.

Rangers will move on quickly with Ross County next up at Hampden Park in the Scottish Premiership with three points needed and hopefully, in a more convincing fashion.

In other Rangers news, Jim White wondered what the Gers need to do to prevent Celtic from winning another Premiership title.
