Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea are not breaching employment laws with their treatment of surplus-to-requirements stars.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted barring certain players from first-team activities is a “very established practice in football” and will save Enzo Maresca “time, effort, knowledge and energy”.

In the latest twist at Cobham, The Telegraph revealed last week (10 August) that Trevoh Chalobah has joined Romelu Lukaku and Armando Broja in being barred from first-team training and facilities.

It is claimed a similar treatment has also been applied to Conor Gallagher, who is still waiting for his Atletico Madrid transfer to go through.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (14 August) that Chelsea will accept bids of between £20-25million for banished defender Chalobah amid interest from Aston Villa, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

The Blues have signed a wealth of new talent this summer and want to balance their books by selling the quartet before the 30 August deadline.

Chalobah treatment at Chelsea does not breach employment laws, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think this breaches employment laws.

“I’ve been in this situation before, working with the manager to take players away from the first team.

“As long as they are given access to training facilities and medical facilities, I don’t think Chelsea will be breaking any employment laws.

“It will be interesting if a player were to challenge that legally.

“But on the other side, why would you have a player who is about to leave be party to all the training techniques and secrets for the new season?

“There’s a very good case for excluding these players. The manager won’t want to exude time, effort, knowledge and energy if these players are moving on.

“It’s a very established practice in football.

“If there are big offers coming in, then they’ve got to understand their time is coming to an end.”
