Rangers will be facing the “far and away” best team in Scotland when they take on Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday, according to Ally McCoist.

The Ibrox legend made the admission that he said “breaks my heart”, acknowledging Celtic have performed excellently in Europe and have secured some very strong results.

After Rangers host Tottenham [12 December] and Celtic take on Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia [10 December], attention turns to Sunday’s Old Firm final [15 December].

McCoist, speaking on TNT Sports [quoted by the Daily Record, 10 December], said: “The results have been great. The performance at home against Leipzig was as good as anything I have seen from Celtic in Europe in a long, long time, really.

“They are a good team. Very good team, by far and away, at this moment in time. Breaks my heart to say it, but you have got to be honest. By far and away the best team in the country.”

Rangers can turn season around with final win over Celtic

While the league is well out of Rangers’ reach, there is no reason why the club – whose resources for some time have been dwarfed by Celtic – can enjoy a relatively successful campaign.

Philippe Clement’s side lifted the League Cup as a silver lining to the tough pill to swallow of last season, and will look to retain the first piece of silverware available in 2024-25.

Gers may have less time on the training pitch to prepare than their bitter rivals, who will be watching the Europa League clash with Spurs from afar with keen interest as Ange Postecoglou returns to Glasgow.

However, Celtic are having to contend with a trip across Europe to Zagreb, with both clubs having performed to a high standard for the majority of their respective European campaigns.

Should the Light Blues come out on top at Hampden Park on Sunday, it could prove the catalyst for a far more encouraging second half of the season – especially if helped by a solid January transfer window.

In other Rangers news, Tam McManus has been blown away by the recent performances of one Gers star.
