Paul Robinson told Jordan Pickford to “calm down” for England as the Everton ace nearly cost his side a goal against Greece.
The 30-year-old left his area to deal with a threat but dawdled on the ball for too long and lost possession only for Levi Colwill to deny the oncoming shot with a spectacular goal-line clearance.
Greece had the ball in the back of the net moments later as Pickford failed to deal with a corner but West Ham United’s Konstantinos Mavropanos goal was ruled out for offside.
Robinson feels the England number one should have done much better on his coverage for BBC Radio 5 Live [10 October, 8:01pm] and urged Pickford to remain more composed.
He said: “Pickford needs to calm down. How many times do we see him like this? He just gets too involved.”
Jordan Pickford needs to remain composed
Pickford was touted to potentially wear the captain’s armband tonight for England, with Harry Kane absent from the starting lineup, but perhaps his erratic behaviour in the opening minutes against Greece is exactly why Lee Carsley handed the reigns to John Stones.
The goalkeeper has had a tough time for Everton thus far in the Premier League with 15 goals conceded in his opening seven matches.
It is never a quiet night when Pickford lines up between the sticks. His antics on the pitch endeared him to Evertonians, and his quality has saved his club more times than not and helped his country go so close to ending a 58-year trophy drought this summer at the European Championships.
His passion cannot be doubted. However, it can certainly get the better of him at times, and when facing inferior opposition on paper such as Greece many would expect the goalkeeper to remain out of the headlines.
Pickford has been the subject of intense criticism this season, some unfairly, and most recently for his goal-line antics which led to his crucial penalty save against Anthony Gordon in the 0-0 draw against Newcastle on Saturday [5 October].
The Everton shot-stopper is hardly going to change his mindset on the pitch and given his years of experience performing for club and country on the biggest stage, it is a small cross to bear for what he can offer.
