Rangers were the subject of a dig from Rod Stewart as he and Ally McCoist discussed Celtic’s prospects in the Champions League.
Speaking on talkSPORT (27 November, 9:52am), Stewart said that while they aren’t likely to win it, Celtic will spend their Champions League money much more wisely than the Gers would in the same position.
McCoist came to the Bears’ defence by telling Stewart to keep his feet on the ground but acknowledged that he’d love to see his club playing in the Champions League again.
Stewart said: “We’re never going to win it, but it’s all about the money and the prestige that goes with it – and you know, we spend our money wisely… as opposed to the other team in Glasgow.”
“Just calm down Rod, don’t get carried away now – you’ve had a couple of good results, don’t get carried away”, McCoist replied.
Stewart argued: “If the shoe was on the other foot you’d be rubbing it in right now.”
McCoist then conceded: “You’d better believe I would be.”
Rangers would love to be in Celtic’s Champions League position
The Gers could well have joined their Old Firm rivals in the new-look Champions League format, but a 3-1 defeat to Dynamo Kyiv over two legs consigned them to the Europa League group stage.
Red Bull Salzburg would still have followed in the play-off round to reach the new league stage of Europe’s top competition, but failure to qualify was still a massive missed opportunity for the Light Blues.
The widening financial disparity between Glasgow’s big two has therefore only widened since thanks to Celtic reaching the Champions League, and that’s been reflected in their starts to the new season.
Celtic currently lead the way in the Scottish Premiership – 11 points ahead of their rivals – and given the rate at which the Light Blues are losing money [Scott McDermott, 29 October], bridging that gap looks almost impossible at present.
While winning the league – and preventing Celtic from reaching 55 titles – looks a long way off, it’s clear that being in a position to possibly return to the top table of European football has to be the Gers’ number-one priority this season.
In other Rangers news, Clement’s job could be on the line if he doesn’t make two key team selection decisions against Nice.
