'Cannot stop laughing' - Ewan Murray in hysterics as Rangers calamity mocked

Jefte’s defending as Motherwell scored against Rangers at Hampden Park was an “all time classic”, according to Ewan Murray.

The Guardian journalist reacted via X on 3 November after the Brazilian ran away from a Steve Sneddon cross in the first half, allowing former Ibrox midfielder Andy Halliday to make a late run into the box and score at the back post.

Michael Stewart was stunned on the live Premier Sports commentary of the 2-1 Gers win, branding it “absolutely criminal” for the full-back to be heading away from the ball, while former Light Blues defender Alan Hutton called it the “craziest” defending he had seen at half-time of the coverage.

Murray was apparently in hysterics at the 20-year-old’s error, writing alongside five laughing emojis: “Cannot stop laughing at Jefte at that goal. An all time classic”.

Jefte error lets Andy Halliday in to score against Rangers

Philippe Clement saw virtually everything go wrong in the first half of a League Cup semi final which had his job on the line in the view of some.

A manager probably can’t legislate for an individual player getting it is so wrong in any given situation, but the lack of communication as Jefte assumed Jack Butland would gather the cross and send him on the counter-attack, only for the keeper to stand and watch as an unchallenged Halliday poked home, was a symptom of the general disfunction at Ibrox currently.

James Tavernier played his own part in the goal being conceded as he failed to close down Sneddon, and it was the struggling captain who Butland directed his frustrations at rather than Jefte on the other side.

As a youngster who only arrived at the club in the summer, and has largely been positive, he can probably be excused an error that ultimately didn’t cost Rangers the game, thanks to Cyriel Dessers’ equaliser and a late Nedim Bajrami winner.

Jefte became a figure of fun for Rangers in their win over Motherwell.

And the fact it was such an obvious error that has already been widely highlighted will likely help ensure Jefte doesn’t make it again.

But although Clement’s side did battle back with an improved performance after the break to show they are still playing for the Belgian, it remains to be seen whether he can oversee the collective improvement he badly needs.

Despite scraping through to the final the prospect of another Old Firm is not especially welcome for a side that is yet to win one in five attempts under the current boss.

The cup win against Motherwell won’t have done a huge amount to convince many of the fans who have already given up on Clement, but the club appears ready to weather the storm with him anyway [BBC Sport, 1 November] so he has to use it as a platform to build from.

In other Rangers news, one Light Blues player is “simply embarrassing” and the club should have got rid of him already, according to David Edgar.
