Todd Cantwell has broken his silence following his summer exit from Rangers and addressed claims made by boss Philippe Clement.
The 26-year-old, who handed in a transfer request during the window, finally left the Gers on 30 August securing a move to Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers [The 4th Official].
Cantwell had been quiet since completing his move to Ewood Park but broke his silence on his Rangers exit to Sky Sports [5 September] and explained his reasoning for seeking pastures new this summer.
He said: “There were a few things that changed with the staff. It felt like a different place and when a new manager comes in they put their stamp on things. We had a bounce and got in a good position.
“I’ve got full respect for the manager at Rangers, but I didn’t believe it was the right place for me – that’s personal. You don’t have to look too far behind tactics, how a team plays and how to get the best out of yourself. made a bold decision and let’s see how it unfolds.”
However, the Englishman then made a note to discredit comments made by Clement in the build-up to his departure.
He said: “It was his decision to tell the press that it was my decision [to leave]. We’d spoken previously before the season had finished and ultimately couldn’t find a happy medium.
“The one thing I’m desperate to clear up, which I touched on on Instagram, I never, ever said I don’t want to play for Rangers Football Club. That never came out of my mouth and never would.”
Todd Cantwell would have stayed at Rangers this summer
Regardless of Cantwell’s intentions, it became apparent throughout the summer transfer window that his career at Rangers would end.
Clement drew first blood, suggesting his former midfielder was desperate to leave the Light Blues and he would only be taking players who wanted to fight for the Rangers badge past the 30 August deadline [Sky Sports].
Cantwell showed glimpses of talent throughout his time in Scotland and, in an ideal world, the sorry affairs that occurred throughout the summer months could have been put to bed with the Englishman focusing on performing consistently for the club.
However, the saga took a different direction. While Rangers will feel hard done by, recouping a nominal fee of £500,000 for a player that warranted a multi-million-pound price tag earlier in the summer, all parties should be satisfied with the outcome.
The now former Rangers man is well within his right to address the Belgian’s comments, the supporters will make their minds up on who is telling the truth but that matters little now with much bigger problems facing the side this season.
After succumbing to a humiliating 3-0 loss to Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season, perhaps Clement will live to regret his decision to allow Cantwell to leave, with the gap between his side and the reigning Scottish Premiership champions as apparent as ever.
In other Rangers news, Danilo is out as the Gers are forced to exclude big name attacking stars from the European squad.
