Celtic humiliation: English pundit shares surprise claim

Celtic need a ‘little bit more pragmatism’ when facing Europe’s elite sides following their humiliating 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (October 1).

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England international goalkeeper believes Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, 51, were taught a ‘lesson’ by the German giants but they still have a ‘good chance’ to qualify for the knock-out rounds.

Over 80,000 fans packed into Dortmund’s famous Signal Iduna Park to watch Celtic be humiliated by last season’s runners-up, sending them back to Glasgow to eat a slice of humble pie.

From the outset, the Germans were too much for Celtic to handle, cutting through their defence at every opportunity. Karim Adeyemi was particularly dangerous, bagging a first-half hattrick.

Celtic still have Champions League hope

The current Scottish champions have been in fine form domestically and look well on their way to securing a fourth consecutive league title.

On the continent, however, home ties against the likes of Club Brugge and Young Boys could prove pivotal for their hopes of qualification.

“Maybe a little bit more pragmatism is needed when you’re going away to the likes of Dortmund, one of Europe’s top teams”, Robinson told Football Insider.

“Maybe it was a lesson learned, they had a great win on the first day against Slovan Bratislava, 5-1.

“But you look at the game since Bratislava, that might give you little clue as to why they were so open.

“They beat Falkirk in the quarter-finals of the Cup 5-2, and then they beat St. Johnstone 6-0.

“So they’re used to scoring that amount of goals. They’ve scored 16 goals in three games but when you go to Dortmund you have to play a little bit differently.

“I still think they’ve got a really good chance in that Champions League, they got pulled apart and they were exposed, that might be a little lesson for them.

“I’ve still got a sneaky feeling they might get out of that group, nobody knows what the magic number is.

“We’ve not had this format before, so nobody knows how many points you need to make the top 20 or the top 10 in that group.

“I think they’ve still got a really good chance, Celtic.”
