Celtic record signing Arne Engels is in safe hands with Brendan Rodgers after making his senior international debut for Belgium against Israel on Friday (September 6).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie was full of praise for the 21-year-old but admitted he will have to ‘fight’ for his place in the team, despite playing alongside the likes of Kevin de Bruyne during the international break.

Engels replaced Youri Tielemans for the last 16 minutes of their first UEFA Nations League game of the international break to partner the legendary Man City midfielder in the centre of the park.

The youngster missed out on their second game against France, returning to Celtic after being suspended thanks to a little know UEFA rule.

Arne Engels has bright future at Celtic

The £11million man made his debut in Celtic’s impressive 3-0 victory over Old Firm rivals Rangers, coming off the bench to replace Paulo Bernardo for the last 28 minutes.

Engels, along with fellow deadline day signing Auston Trusty, could be handed their first start for the Glasgow club in their Scottish Premier League game against Hearts on Saturday (September 14).

“I’d love to see them come in”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“They’ll definitely get game time, I’m not sure what they’ll be given but I’d love to see Trusty play with Cameron Carter-Vickers, I’d love to see that happen.

“I’d also love to see the Barcelona left-back play (Alex Valle).

“It’s a home tie and Engels knows he’s got to fight but I think he going to be a superstar, he just made his debut for the Belgium senior squad.

“Playing with Kevin de Bruyne, you’ve got to have something about you if you’re in that team.

“I know they’ve not been winning but wow, they’ve got some real good players.

“He’s only 21-years-old, I think Brendan Rodgers is the right man to coach him further, I really do.

“He’ll be looking after him, he’ll be getting game time but I do think he’ll go with the midfield from last time, Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, and Paulo Bernardo.”
