Celtic would accept a bid of £35million for 23-year-old Matt O’Riley if one comes in this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Football Insider journalist and Scottish expert Daniel Bowers stated on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that Brendan Rodgers “doesn’t get a say” if a hefty fee is offered to the club.
Even though fans there would be “disappointment” amongst fans if the midfielder were to depart Celtic Park, there’s also an acceptance that a big offer is something Celtic would have to agree to.
A fee of £35million would break the Scottish transfer record by £10million, proving just how influential O’Riley was last season and the attention he’s garnered ever since.
The £25m record was set by Kieran Trippier’s transfer to Arsenal in the summer of 2019.
Celtic selling O’Riley would be a massive blow to the squad
While a sale for the central midfielder might be inevitable due to his impressive performances last season, his departure would significantly impact on the squad.
The Danish international featured 37 times in the Scottish top flight last season, contributing 18 goals and 13 assists.
He was a pivotal factor in the Hoops’ winning the Scottish Premiership, and he also thrived in the Champions League, by registering three assists in the European competition.
