Rangers will receive a “handsome reward” for selling James Tavernier and Connor Goldson to Al-Ettifaq this summer, says Paul Robinson.

Former goalkeeper Robinson, speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, said a reunion with Steven Gerrard for the duo would also earn them a financial windfall in the process.

Football Insider revealed on 27 June that 32-year-old captain Tavernier, who has been at Ibrox since 2015, has agreed terms on an “astronomical” package from the Saudi Pro League side.

Goldson, 31, is also held in high esteem by Gerrard, having been an integral part of the Gers side to lift a record 55th Scottish title in 2021 under the former boss.

Whilst Rangers supporters have shared their backing of the potential decision to move on from the old guard as reported by Football Insider [26 June], a double deal could be the best solution for all parties, and Robinson notes the financial incentives for both players and selling clubs.

Rangers set for windfall from Saudi sales

Robinson has pointed out the rising strength of the Saudi Pro League, with clubs having “hand-picked talent” from across the world, and says Rangers could benefit from agreeing to sell Gerrard’s side the experienced pair.

“When the Saudi pro League comes knocking, you’re going to get a big fee aren’t you,” he said.

“A player’s value is relevant to who wants to buy them, it’s like property.

“The fee wouldn’t be as high if [Tavernier and Goldson] were being chased by Premier League clubs in England.

“If players are going to Saudi Arabia, you know they’ll get remunerated very handsomely, and clubs will want to receive a good transfer fee which they can reinvest back into the squad.

“A lot of players – particularly the age of these two – will happily go and play in Saudi now.

“The league is getting stronger, and players are going for the financial remuneration.”

In other news, Rangers could offer this player the immediate captaincy if he signs for the club.
