Celtic players were given a ‘lesson’ after suffering a humiliating 7-1 Champions League defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (October 1).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes players will be ’embarrassed’ after their heavy Champions League defeat and will have to take a more defensive approach if they want to progress.

Dortmund’s quality was too much for Celtic to handle, cutting through the Scottish Champion’s defence at will with winger Karim Adeyemi needed just 31 minutes to score a hattrick.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, 37, was uncharacteristically shaky, conceding over 50 per cent of the shots he faced and giving away an early penalty after rushing off his line to take out Jamie Gittens.

A change of tact needed for Celtic game vs Atalanta

Over 80,000 fans packed into the Signal Iduna Park to watch Celtic be humiliated by the German giants, sending them back to Glasgow with their heads bowed in shame.

Despite a poor start to the domestic season, Atalanta won’t be pushovers, having drawn 0-0 with Premier League Arsenal and comfortably beating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0.

“I was embarrassed on Tuesday night, there are very few times Celtic go out and embarrass themselves”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“All the players are saying they’re embarrassed and it was embarrassing to watch but it was a lesson.

“If you learn from it and next time you go away from home, I mean it’s only Atalanta, let’s sit in and make it hard for people to score.

“I don’t like counterattacking but sometimes we’ve got the pace that means we can hit the counterattack.

“Sometimes the wee 10-yard or 15-yard passes aren’t what’s needed, you need to hit it over the top, turn them around, and get us up the park, that’s what’s needed.

“They didn’t do that last night and with Kyogo up front, if you put it over the top there aren’t many people that are going to beat him to the ball.

“It didn’t happen last night, I was looking for it and it’s disappointing but I won’t be feeling as bad as the players at the moment.”
