Champions League club keep tabs on exit-linked Rangers star - report

Monaco and Olympiacos are keeping tabs on James Tavernier’s situation at Rangers amid interest from Trabzonspor, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist reported via X on Saturday (20 July) that while Trabzonspor are expected to make a new approach for the 32-year-old after their initial offer was rejected, they’re not the only club in the race.

Besiktas who are managed by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq are both interested in the defender while newly promoted side Al-Qadsiah are also considering making an approach.

On top of that, Europa Conference League winners Olympiacos and Champions League side Monaco are known to be keeping an eye on where Tavernier could end up this summer.

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid growing transfer interest?

In an ideal world, Rangers will be hoping Trabzonspor’s interest in Tavernier this summer will help them create a bidding war for his services to drive up their asking price in the coming weeks.

But so far, the Turkish club are the only side who have acted upon their interest with an official bid. While that remains the case, the Light Blues are on the back foot when it comes to negotiating the best possible deal.

Wherever he ends up, it now seems inevitable that the 32-year-old will leave Glasgow this summer as teams begin to line up to try and secure his signature. His exit has always been a possibility, but now it feels like a certainty.

Rangers James Tavernier
James Tavernier has had a stellar Rangers career.

While replacing his goals and assits at the top end of the pitch will be difficult, Philippe Clement already has a more than capable replacement at right-back in Dujon Sterling and the former Chelsea man is expected to step into the fold.

Hopefully, any money received for Tavernier’s signature will be reinvested back into Clement’s attacking ranks so that the Gers can attempt to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.
