Rangers still have a lot of work to do in the second half of the summer transfer window as preparations continue for the new season.
Philippe Clement was eager to overhaul the entirety of his playing squad this summer and while some big names have left on free transfers, only Robby McCrorie has departed Ibrox for a transfer fee this summer.
That could be set to change in the coming days as reports suggest James Tavernier could be set to complete a summer move to Trabzonspor “reasonably quickly” [David Edgar, 19 July].
The Turkish club saw their initial offer for the Gers’ skipper knocked back, but are expected to return with an improved proposal in the coming days to try and get the deal over the line [Fabrizio Romano, 19 July].
Although the exact details of the potential deal are not public knowledge, Trabzonspor are expected to pay a fee in the region of £3million to £4million to try and bring Tavernier to Turkey [David Edgar, 19 July].
The skipper’s imminent exit could see Rangers reignite their interest in Brighton winger Abdallah Sima as the new influx of funding may help them meet the Seagull’s valuation to get a deal over the line.
Discussing Sima, Clement told the Rangers Review (15 July): “I’ve been in touch with him, of course. He’s like one of my sons.
“Abda loves the club. Abda loves the way of playing we had last season and his role in that. He loved his teammates and the staff.
“But at the end of the day, Brighton is the owner so it’s all about the money then. At the moment it’s not possible. But we will see along the way if there comes a possibility because we would love to get him back. We will see if it is possible.”
Will Rangers sign Abdallah Sima amid James Tavernier exit update?
Whether or not the fee that will be received for Tavernier will be enough for Rangers to bring Sima back in the coming weeks as Clement suggested remains to be seen, but it is unlikely to dent their hopes.
Agreeing personal terms with the Senegal international shouldn’t be an issue given his love for the club so the only real stumbling block present is the Gers’ ability to match Brighton’s valuation.
If and when Tavernier’s exit is confirmed in the coming days, it will be interesting to see whether or not Clement’s side lodge an official offer for the forward or turn their attention to other transfer targets.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been labelled the favourites in the transfer race for former Stoke striker Tyreese Campbell
