Chelsea have received a major boost in their hopes of signing Jadon Sancho from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

The Blues are targeting a move for another winger having deemed Raheem Sterling surplus to requirements, while the future of Mykhailo Mudryk appears uncertain after manager Enzo Maresca criticised him again following a poor display at Wolves last weekend.

Sancho, meanwhile, called a truce with his United boss Erik ten Hag earlier this summer but he hasn’t featured for the Red Devils since he missed a penalty in the Community Shield shootout against Manchester City.

The England international will hope a move to London to the club he supported as a boy will reignite a career that has stalled badly since he opted to join United from Borussia Dortmund three years ago.

Chelsea had been facing competition from Juventus for the signing of the 24-year-old from Juventus but the Italian giants have shelved their interest for now.

The Old Lady have baulked at United’s demands and are unlikely to enter back into negotiations unless the Premier League club lowers their asking price.

Stamford Bridge increasingly looks as thought it will be Sancho’s destination on the final day of the window, especially after Maresca reiterated his stance on Sterling last night following a defeat against Servette.

He said: ‘The only thing I can say is the ones who are going to get minutes are the ones who I think can help us.

‘It’s not just Raheem [Sterling]. It’s all the players who are training apart.

‘The moment the transfer window closes, they are not going to get minutes.’
