Chris Jack has admitted he would be “really surprised” if Rangers entered the free-agent market to sign a new central midfielder.

The Light Blues have looked slightly short of depth in the middle of the park so far this season, with many fans suggesting Philippe Clement could benefit from a more dominant holding midfielder in his squad.

Although supporters have urged the Belgian to consider signing a free agent to bolster his ranks, Rangers Review journalist Jack insists there won’t be any new arrivals before the January window.

Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (6 October, 6:07) he said: “I would be really surprised if Rangers go and sign anybody.

“That free agent market has been known since the transfer window closed. If they were going to bring anybody in, it would have happened before now.

“This is the group Philippe Clement is going to work with before the January window opens.”

Are Rangers close to any new signings after transfer deadline at Ibrox?

While there are some big-name players still without clubs at this stage of the season, there is usually a good reason that they haven’t been able to attract a new suitor throughout the summer.

Any free agent that the Gers could potentially sign at this stage of the campaign would not only need to quickly adapt to the Scottish game but also build their fitness to get up to speed before they could feature, having missed pre-season.

Even if this hypothetical midfielder did that at record speed, they would be unlikely to make a major impact before the January transfer window rolled around anyway.

On top of that, there will be very few players who are still without clubs that are any better than the likes of Connor Barron, Mohamed Diomande and Nicolas Raskin who are already fighting for a starting role in the blue half of Glasgow.

A new number six may be needed in January, but Rangers have made the right call by waiting until then to begin their business.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been told to make a new Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane call at Ibrox this season
