Chris Jack has pondered whether Rangers could look at adding another centre-back to their ranks in January after their 3-0 victory against Ross County in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.
The Gers are now just two points adrift of second-placed Aberdeen and could well take over their spot in the league due to the game in hand they have and if they manage to keep up their recent run of form.
Writing for the Rangers Review website (8 December), Jack shared his thoughts on Philippe Clement exploring a January move for a defender especially given the doubts over the performances of summer signing Robin Propper this season.
“The partnership between Souttar and Balogun is the preferred one for many supporters. Souttar is the first choice at centre-back and deserves credit for the way he has performed over the course of the campaign,” he wrote.
“Given the doubts over Robin Propper’s suitability for Scottish football, Balogun is the clear second pick. With the January window approaching, could Clement look to add in that area?”
Philippe Clement could do with another centre-back within his Rangers ranks
The vast majority of the 2024/25 season has been well below par for a team of Rangers’ standards.
Being third in the league might be a good turnout for other teams in the Scottish Premiership but for the Gers, it’s well off the pace.
Granted, Clement’s main problem within his team this term has been their lack of firepower in the final third but Robin Propper’s lack of readiness hasn’t helped matters much either.
The Dutchman was brought in over the summer as a replacement for Conor Goldson to try and upgrade the Gers’ back line but instead, it feels like they’ve downgraded their ranks.
Leon Balogun and John Souttar have formed a solid partnership thanks to Propper’s lack of readiness but at 36 years old, it’s hard to know how regularly Balogun will be available, and it’s almost certain that the duo won’t be able to play every game.
These are all just rumours at the moment of course but on paper, bringing in another centre-back makes plenty of sense.
