Chris Sutton blasts Rangers, scoffs at what they may have told Celtic board

Chris Sutton has blasted Rangers and suggested they may have told Celtic to “trust” them after new Old Firm ticket developments.

There will be no away supporters at either of the first two Old Firm matches of the season after the Hoops U-turned on their decision to hand the Light Blues an allocation of 2,500 at Parkhead.

While the latest update has stemmed plenty of discussions from fans and pundits alike, Sky Sports pundit Sutton has slammed the Ibrox board and scoffed at their suggestion it would be “alright on the night”.

Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (17 August) he said: “It’s a shame we are back in this mess again after getting the hopes up this fixture was returning to some sort of normality.

“Yet, here we are, facing another away fans shut out at Celtic Park next month and the same again at Ibrox at New Year. It’s far from ideal, but I’ve got to say I can see where Celtic are coming from over this.

“If Rangers can’t be straight with their own fans, how can they take their word at face value when it comes to Celtic supporters? It looks to me like the agreement reached last March was on the provision that certain safety measures were made in the wake of previous problems.

“Celtic have held up their side of the bargain and got the planning permission and the work done ahead of the first derby. But what about Rangers? I get the fact the return game is months away and there’s still time to sort it.

“Unless there are plans set in stone, though, then how can Celtic know for sure they will be carried out? After all, this is a Rangers board who can’t even tell their own supporters if they will even be back at Ibrox by that point.

“So they’d be telling the Celtic board, ‘trust us, it’ll be alright on the night’. I don’t think so.”

Will Rangers fans be at Parkhead for Old Firm clash v Celtic?

The one thing that both Rangers and Celtic fans can agree on is that it is ridiculous that one of the biggest fixtures in world football will once again be played with only one fanbase in attendance.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Rangers manager Philippe Clement replaced Michael Beale at Ibrox.

While both sides will blame one another for their role in the decision, the only people who really suffer here are the supporters who are once again going to have to miss out on another exciting experience.

Celtic may be within their rights to doubt an Ibrox board who haven’t exactly been the most trustworthy in recent months, but the Gers have given their rivals no reason to doubt their ability to prepare a stadium.

Hopefully, these issues can be ironed out before the second round of games rolls around. Both clubs need their plans set in stone so this “mess” of a situation can be put to bed once and for all.
