Chris Sutton believes Aberdeen will demand an “absolute fortune” in compensation from Rangers for Connor Barron.
The Scottish Premiership sides have yet to agree on a fee for the 22-year-old after he completed his move to Ibrox in June.
Aberdeen rejected a £525,000 offer from the Gers after the signing was formalised [Daily Record] and, six months later, are no closer to reaching a compensation agreement.
Sutton addressed the ongoing debacle with The Press and Journal [17 December] and believes the Light Blues have shot themselves in the foot by allowing the situation to drag on.
He said: “It is strange and probably tells us how far apart both clubs are at with their valuations. Aberdeen have lost a good player in Barron and will want every penny they can.
“They will want an absolute fortune.
“I know Barron wasn’t in Rangers’ starting XI for the Premier Sports Cup final but the better he does the worse it is for Rangers in terms of the more they’ll have to pay.
“I can understand both sides of it. However, as is typical at this time year, they’ll probably now put it [the tribunal] to after Christmas.”
Rangers should have settled the fee for Connor Barron
Barron immediately established himself as a regular starter for Philippe Clement, but his displays at Ibrox could be counter-productive for Rangers.
The Scottish Under-21s international has caught the eye on several occasions this season, and while the Gers sit two points behind his former employers in the SPFL, albeit with a game in hand, Aberdeen understand all too well the talent they have allowed to slip through their fingers.
Alan Burrows, chief executive officer for the Dons, has already slammed the SPFL for the delay in the tribunal process, sparking fresh fears they intend to squeeze every penny they can get out of Rangers.
He certainly warrants a sizeable fee for his service – Barron has been one of the better performers for the Light Blues amid a pretty terrible domestic campaign thus far.
The Gers will undoubtedly rue not reaching an agreement with Aberdeen sooner – the financial woes at Ibrox have been well-documented this year, and the lingering fee will only worsen matters.
However, a compromise will be reached in the New Year, and Rangers can finally put the off-the-pitch feud with Aberdeen in the past and focus on salvaging what remains in Scotland ahead of the second half of the season.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have been given their answer on a Keelan Adams transfer as the Falkirk boss shares a “surprised” admission.
