Clement favourite leaves Rangers permanently to join new team already - report

John Lundstram is expected to arrive in Turkey to complete his move to Trabzonspor next weekend after leaving Rangers, the Scottish Sun reports.

According to the outlet’s website on 18 June the English midfielder has a medical at his new team booked for Sunday (23 June), after which he is set to sign for two years.

Borna Barisic is also expected to join him at the Turkish Super Lig club after the Croatian’s own exit from Ibrox, as the pair were released by the Light Blues along with Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe and Jon McLaughlin as their contracts expired.

Lundstram, 30, made a total of 153 Rangers appearances and was a favourite of Philippe Clement, who had insisted an extension would be agreed last season but to no avail.

It was only two years ago that Ibrox was echoing to thousands of Gers supporters singing how Lundstram was “the best on earth” but his exit won’t be seen as quite the blow it once might have been.

The former Sheffield United man was virtually ever-present under Clement last season and was a big part of the excellent run of form that saw the club lift the Viaplay Cup, qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League and overturn Celtic’s lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

But his form fell away as much as anyone’s later in the campaign as the hard-fought advantage in the league was thrown away, and his nightmare performance in the final league Old Firm derby where he scored an own goal and was shown a straight red card before half time summed up a bad end to the season all round.

All indications for most of last term from Lundstram and his manager was that his love for the club would see a contract extension signed.

But evidently an agreement couldn’t be reached and he looks set to join Trabzonspor even before Barisic does, despite the defender being linked to the move for longer.

Clement is restocking his squad and has a clear need in midfield after Lundstram and Jack’s departures, where Connor Barron is one potential replacement who could continue the trend of getting younger throughout the playing staff.
