Philippe Clement is now reaching a “worrying stage” as Rangers fans are starting to turn on him and not go to the games, says Kris Boyd.

The Sky Sports pundit told the Scottish Sun’s Go Ballistic show on 21 October that the Light Blues have “no chance” of getting anywhere near Celtic this season after a 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock the previous day showed there are “so many problems” at the club.

He said it was already “worse” than a crisis at Ibrox with performances even poorer than results and cast major doubt on the manager’s future as he claimed, “for me I just don’t see how this is going to improve”.

Boyd also dismissed the idea that Clement deserves more slack given the chaos and resignations above him at the club, suggesting the Belgian has been able to get away with more because of that, and claimed that fans are going to start deciding not to spend their money to go and watch the club

Boyd said (2m): “The Kilmarnock performance, that is as poor as I have seen in a long, long time… Philippe Clement tried to predict the future in terms of, I think it was, ‘We will be 200 per cent better come October’.

“I don’t see it, I really don’t see it. And for me it is getting to the worrying stage. You might have a few people who say you’ve got to stick to what’s been happening, but you can only stick to it if you see improvement, and I don’t see any improvement, I really don’t. The next couple of weeks is going to be massive.”

Rangers blow opportunity with Kilmarnock loss

Key points in any manager’s reign determine how everything else is seen and the weekend has put all the wins leading up to it in a far more negative context.

A win to close the gap on Celtic and Aberdeen to three points after their draw 24 hours earlier would have been a positive sign that the Gers could respond to take advantage of a key opportunity with the pressure on.

To lose, and in such pedestrian fashion, unsurprisingly leaves observers wondering what it is going to take for Clement and his players to snap into action.

There are plenty of mitigating factors to excuse bumps in the road for Clement, but when he is only a point better off after eight games than Michael Beale was when sacked a year ago it is increasingly hard not to determine that he isn’t doing a good enough job either.

But with those in charge, or who is still left, seemingly determined to stick with the 50-year-old despite the obvious difficulties it looks like the status quo will likely continue.

Rangers called time on Giovanni van Bronckhorst and then Michael Beale after less than a year each and might have been accused of being too quick to pull the plug, but if Clement doesn’t show signs of progress soon they run the risk of going to the opposite extreme.

His opening run of results as Rangers boss last term suggested he could be a success if given the proper tools, but it has now been months since it felt like that and evidence for the contrary is currently mounting up.

In other Rangers news, a major potential new signing has been tipped for an invitation to come in and train with the Light Blues.
