Clinton Morrison believes Tom Cairney’s red card was the correct decision as Tottenham drew 1-1 with Fulham on Sunday.
Having already scored the equaliser in North London on 1 December, cancelling out Brennan Johnson’s opener, the substitute was sent off for a challenge on Dejan Kulusevski after a VAR review.
Cairney was initially shown a yellow card for the foul, but after a quick review by the side of the pitch, referee Darren Bond changed his decision to send the Cottagers down to 10 men.
Speaking live via Sky Sports [1 December, 3:17pm], Morrison said: “He [Cairney] lost possession of the ball and he’s trying to win it back, tackling with his left foot and his right foot is high on Kulusevski.
“It’s high up on his calf and goes down the back of his Achilles. He’s given a yellow card before VAR gets involved. The referee goes to have a look and sends him off. Yeah, it’s a red card.
“Wilfried Ndidi did the same to Cole Palmer last week though and it wasn’t a red card. They have to get the consistency level higher but it was a red card.”
Tom Cairney sees red as Tottenham draw 1-1 v Fulham
Cairney can have few complaints about the decision. Many will argue that a yellow card will have sufficed but it was a challenge that could have left Kulusevski in a much worse condition.
Even with the absence of Dominic Solanke from the squad, Postecoglou will be disappointed with his side’s inability to capitalise on a chance to win all three points.
While only seven minutes were remaining when the red card was shown, Spurs never looked like scoring the winner and it seems like two points dropped now.
The same could be said about the 2-2 draw with AS Roma in the Europa League on Thursday, with Mats Hummels netting the equaliser in added time, all the more frustrating after the 4-0 win over Manchester City.
Postecoglou’s squad has shown plenty of positive signs this season but is also known to slip up at unexpected moments, and while Fulham are in the top half of the league table, it should be a win.
