Tottenham dropped points in a crucial fixture against Fulham, and Ange Postecoglou must’ve realised his mistake with James Maddison.
Spurs hosted the Cottagers at home on 1 December in the Premier League, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw after goals from Brennan Johnson and Tom Cairney in the second half.
The Lilywhites looked to have a slight advantage in terms of possession during the game, but the visitors were the more threatening side.
Fraser Forster pulled off some brilliant saves to ensure that Tottenham took at least a point from the match, and Postecoglou needs to thank the goalkeeper in the dressing room.
Maddison returned to the starting lineup after dropping to the bench against Roma in the Europa League on 28 November, as Spurs drew 2-2 against the Italians.
The Lilywhites faithful hoped the England international would kick on at home to Fulham after his magnificent display in the 4-0 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League, but that didn’t happen.
James Maddison struggles continued in Tottenham v Fulham
Maddison’s performance against Pep Guardiola’s team was an anomaly considering how he’s been in the current campaign, and the midfielder showcased his lack of confidence, with an xG of 0.07 and xA of 0.06 versus the Cottagers, as per FotMob.
The Englishman had plenty of the ball, making 65 touches, but he was sloppy with it, completing just 33 per cent of his dribbles, having a crossing accuracy of 20 per cent and failing to find a teammate with any of his three long balls.
With Marco Silva’s team putting pressure on Tottenham, the 28-year-old being dispossessed thrice didn’t help Spurs’ cause.
Maddison was also unreliable defensively for the Lilywhites, attempting zero tackles, making zero interceptions and winning just three of his 10 duels.
Postcoglou made a blunder by dropping Dejan Kulusevski to the bench, and the Australian will surely think twice before calling upon the former Leicester star again this season.
