Everton star Ashley Young defended Bruno Fernandes on Sky Sports after the Manchester United captain’s red card against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League (29 September), the veteran Toffees full-back said that referee Chris Kavanagh was wrong to show Fernandes a straight red for his challenge on James Maddison.

Fernandes slipped into a reckless attempted tackle and caught Maddison on the side of his leg, getting nowhere near the ball and leaving his side down to 10 men on their way to a 3-0 loss.

Young said: “I don’t think it’s serious foul play, or it’s reckless.

“Okay, he’s out of control, but he slips, and you can clearly see that he slips and I don’t think he goes to take out James Maddison either.

“He hits him with the back of his heel as well, so I think the referee’s got it wrong there.”

Everton fans could be worried by Ashley Young’s comments

While many a Toffees fan may agree with Young and also view Fernandes’ red card as a soft one, they certainly wouldn’t like to see their 39-year-old defender flying into similar kinds of challenges.

Regardless of Fernandes’ evident slip, the studs-up nature of the contact on Maddison was a sending-off, bar none, and would be the same for any team in any Premier League game.

Blues fans could be even more concerned with Young’s attitude to the challenge given his recent record at Goodison, being sent off in the very first game of the season against Brighton.

The veteran has been consistently selected with constant issues for Sean Dyche and his other options in the form of Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson.

At 39, Young’s role in the squad will also be to provide a guiding hand for younger players, but Dyche will be hoping that it’s purely his Manchester United bias that influenced his comments on Fernandes.
