Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou responds when asked about speculation linking him with the England job

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has emerged as a shock candidate for the England manager’s job.

According to The Telegraph, the Spurs boss is expected to be on the list of potential replacements for Gareth Southgate following his resignation earlier this week.

FA technical director John McDermott is said to be a big fan of the Tottenham manager’s work, having followed his career since he was managing in Australia.

On Wednesday evening, Tottenham got their pre-season friendly programme under way with a 5-1 win at Scottish outfit Hearts.

After the game, football.london journalist Alasdair Gold asked Postecoglou about those links with the England vacancy.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou plays down England links

“I was having a nap this afternoon,” said the Tottenham boss. “I have no idea.

“I’m the Tottenham manager and I’m determined to bring success to this club. That’s where my focus is totally.”

Meanwhile, the Evening Standard has quoted Postecoglou as saying: “Mate I’m at the start of pre-season!

“Big year, I’m the Tottenham manager. I’ve got nothing else but trying to bring success to this football club.

“Until I do that, there’s no point me thinking about anything else. I had a nap this afternoon mate, so I’ve got no idea what’s going on.”

Spurs fans will be buoyed by Postecoglou response

Postecoglou has experience at international level, having managed Australia between 2013 and 2017.

It’s understandable to see the 58-year-old being linked with the England job, considering his great work at the highest levels over the years.

Nevertheless, his response will no doubt go down well with Tottenham fans.

Postecoglou’s maiden season at Spurs has been very promising and there’s considerable optimism going into next term, but there’s still a lot of work to do.

Tottenham came close to sealing a top-four place last season, but fell just short, and Postecoglou will no doubt be eager to get his team back into the Champions League this time round.
