Club respond as Rangers approach claim emerges amid links to new defender - report

Rangers have not made an official approach to FC Twente for their defender Mees Hilgers, according to Football Scotland.

The news outlet reported on 1 June that the club responded that they have had no contact initiated from the Ibrox outfit for the 23-year-old centre-back.

This comes after reports linking him with a move to Glasgow this summer and that it would potentially take a premium to prise him away.

Mees Hilgers can replace Connor Goldson at Rangers

The potential interest in Hilgers comes as Connor Goldson faces an uncertain future at the club.

Goldson, who is 31 years old, has been a key player for Gers since joining in 2018, but his performances have declined in recent seasons.

With two years left on his contract, the Ibrox outfit may be tempted to cash in on the Englishman if they receive a good offer for him.

Hilgers, on the other hand, has impressed for Twente in the Eredivisie and could be a long-term replacement for Goldson in the backline.

He’s nearly a decade younger than Goldson and if Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement both want him at the club, then the board has to back them.

It remains to be seen if this is a false dawn or if the club are genuinely considering a move for the Dutchman.
