'Completely Different Level' - David Tanner reacts as Rangers linked to 'Upgrade' key appointment

Adrian Bevington is a far more attractive CEO candidate for Rangers than Jim Gillespie was, according to David Tanner.

The talkSPORT broadcaster reacted positively via X on 11 September to a report from the Daily Record the same day which said the former English FA chief wants talks over replacing James Bisgrove at Ibrox.

Bisgrove “stunned” the club with a sudden exit to Saudi Arabia with Al Qadsiah earlier this year [Scottish Sun, 30 May] and until as recently as last week St Mirren vice-chair Gillespie was considered the frontrunner to replace him, until the Daily Mail reported on 10 September he was out of the race after “advanced” talks.

But Tanner believes the latest developments look positive. He wrote: “Interesting. He is highly regarded down south. He’d be a good leader and figurehead for Rangers, if they can land him.

“No offence to the guy from St Mirren (a terrific club), but Adrian Bevington is a completely different level. An upgrade on what Rangers have had recently, too.”

John Bennett in search of new Rangers CEO with St Mirren man out

While the Gillespie pursuit hadn’t instilled a great deal of excitement in the Gers fanbase [Heart & Hand, 10 September] it still seemed a deflating development for John Bennett to be unable to close that deal anyway.

But if there is a valid alternative candidate on the cards already it may be a positive, with the club clearly in need of some competent leadership.

Between a flagging season on the pitch already, a frustrating transfer window, and the Ibrox building-work debacle the supporters are worn down.

Bevington himself has played down the situation [via Daily Record, 11 September] and says he hasn’t yet had any talks over the CEO position, but did speak positively about the idea of moving into Scottish football on Go Radio on 5 September.

Adrian Bevington has been backed for the Rangers CEO role.

But if he is interest and Bennett is well-disposed to the idea then it would surely be beneficial for some urgency to be injected into the equation.

The Rangers chairman may have been sidetracked by the mess caused by the delayed materials forcing Philippe Clement and his side out of Ibrox to Hampden Park, and Bisgrove’s exit may have been a surprise at the time, but it has been months now without a new man in the top job.

If the club had operated like a well-oiled machine in the mean time it might not have mattered, but they have been calamitous, so it isn’t hard to link one to another and feel an appointment needs to be made.

In other Rangers news, an “official” transfer offer update has emerged amid interest in a Gers star before foreign windows close.
