Romanian agent makes Hagi Rangers release clause claim as 'Problem' mooted

Romanian agent Giovanni Becali claims Ianis Hagi has a release clause of £2.95million but Rangers are putting off potential suitors as they are unable to see him play.

The Romanian sports agent – whom Hagi has distanced himself from earlier this week by clarifying Becali did not represent him – suggested the fact that attacking midfielder has been ostracised from the first team means clubs are unable to scout him.

The Romanian international saw approaches from clubs in his homeland rebuffed by Rangers, who have cast him aside due to a wage hike which will be triggered should be appear again for the first team [Daily Record, 13 August].

Becali said on Prietenii lui Ovidiu in quotes reported by Digisport (11 September): “Ianis’ problem is that Rangers have set a clause for him, €3.5million [£2.95m].

“If a club comes in for him and pays it, he can leave. But the problem is Rangers aren’t giving him the opportunity so no one can watch him.”

Ianis Hagi and Rangers stand-off goes on

It may have seemed as if on 30 August there would be no longer any chance Hagi would leave Rangers before January, but plenty of nations’ transfer windows continued long into September.

Now, it looks very unlikely and the Romania midfielder – who starred in the knockout phase of Euro 2024 in the famous yellow shirt – is set for months wasting away in the club’s B team unless a reassessment of his contract is agreed.

The clause was put in place by a previous regime and Philippe Clement has reinforced he does not see Hagi as part of his plans, having seen him spend an underwhelming loan spell with Alaves last season.

But his sorry stint in Spain certainly does not define him as a player as seen by both his club and international exploits – he does have 99 appearances to his name for the Gers already, which is becoming an increasingly cursed number for him.

Rangers and Hagi’s camp must strike a solution sooner rather than later for the benefit of both the club’s finances and the 25-year-old’s career.
