Tom English has singled out Cyriel Dessers for losing his physical battles as Rangers crumbled to an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Celtic on 1 September.
The BBC journalist insisted that Cameron Carter-Vickers won every battle against the striker so convincingly, he was left looking like “Roadkill”.
Rangers were mostly dominated throughout the tie with their arch-rivals, once again showing Philippe Clement up and extending his shocking record in the Old Firm.
“It could have been the game in microcosm,” English wrote for the BBC.
“Fifty minutes in, Celtic leading 2-0, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Cyriel Dessers going for a loose ball.
“Carter-Vickers wins the physical battle to such an overwhelming extent that Dessers ended up on the floor with the American looking back at him, in the way you might look at roadkill.
“In every department worth mentioning, Celtic won a landslide victory. Rangers won the yellow card count. That was about it.”
Philippe Clement under massive pressure at Rangers
The 2024/25 season was supposed to be one where Rangers finally managed to turn their form around and put up a strong challenge for the Scottish Premiership once again.
However, as was shown on 1 September, Celtic are still miles ahead and have more quality across the pitch despite several windows of the squad being overhauled.
The likes of Connor Barron [Scottish Sun, 23 August] and former FC Twente ace Robin Propper have been brought to Ibrox this season to bolster the ranks, but it feels as if nothing has changed from last term.
It’s all well and good for Dessers firing goals consistently against the likes of Ross County, but if you can’t do it on the big stage in Scotland, you won’t last long.
Evidently, any optimism has been short-lived as they now find themselves residing in fourth place, five points adrift from league leaders, Celtic.
Granted, it’s still early days in the season but things need to be changed soon if Clement wants to be taken seriously as a title contender this season.
