'Embarrassing' - Kris Boyd delivers scathing Rangers squad assessment after Old Firm defeat

Kris Boyd has delivered a brutal criticism of the Rangers squad, claiming none of them would get near the Celtic side.

The former Gers striker gave the verdict after Philippe Clement’s side were soundly beaten 3-0 at Celtic Park in the season’s first Old Firm.

The Light Blues must now lick their wounds over the international break before returning to face Dundee United.

Boyd, speaking to Sky Sports host Eilidh Barbour [1 September] following the defeat, said: “That was embarrassing. How many of the Rangers team get in that Celtic team? None. None, and that’s where you’re trying to get to.

“None of them would get anywhere near it. Celtic make things happen; Rangers hope things happen.

“It’s about time people wised up and realised that this isn’t going anywhere fast – that was embarrassing.”

Rangers miles away from Celtic

It’s hard to argue against Boyd’s scathing assessment – and this is coming from a man firmly in the blue camp.

When you listen to the views of the likes of former Celtic duo Chris Sutton and John Hartson on the matter, it reaffirms the general consensus on how far away Rangers are at present.

In terms of the statistics of the game, it looks far more even – both sides mustered four attempts on target from Celtic’s 14 shots to the Gers’ 13.

But it is merely another example of when your own two eyes outrank the numbers – Clement and his team know they were second best in every department, saw their backline regularly breached, and were ultimately fortunate to head home holding just the three.

Clement and Nils Koppen will remain frustrated with what they perceive to be an incomplete transfer window in which the club were too slow to offload problematic or surplus players – costing the club time to bring in all the reinforcements they felt they needed.

The fortnight break will provide a chance to regroup, but it is clear a cup competition will be as good as the only chance the Gers have to claim silverware this season.
