Tottenham have likely decided to rebrand their badge because their stadium is currently used to host multiple non-football-related events.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the change is unlikely to have any impact on the north London club’s commercial revenue.
Tottenham announced on 18 November they have rebranded their badge following a ninth-month process.
The new crest is similar to the old badge, but the club’s name has been removed from underneath the iconic cockerel in a controversial move that has dismayed a big section of the Tottenham fanbase.
Spurs said the new badge will be seen throughout the stadium at their upcoming matches.
It will also be visible at various non-football-related events – such as concerts, boxing and NFL – as Tottenham have permission to host 30 events per year.
The club’s commercial revenue rose from £183.5million in 2022 to £227.7million in 2023 as they continue to cash in on opportunities away from football.
Tottenham have made decision to neutralise their badge
Borson believes Spurs may have decided to neutralise their badge for the stadium branding at non-football events.
“It’s a pretty minor change,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I wouldn’t see there being any great commercial difference from the creation of the new badge.
“I think it’s as much as anything about neutralising it for the stadium and for the image of the club, especially with the stadium being a multi-purpose stadium rather than it always being badged up with Tottenham Hotspur. That’s one aspect.
“It’s as minor change branding-wise as you could imagine given that all they have done is remove the name of the club.
“It’s hard to see how it would have direct commercial impact.”
