Ianis Hagi must be heavily involved for Rangers at least until the January transfer window, Stephen McGinn has said.

The 26-year-old was reinstated into Philippe Clement’s squad after resolving a contract standoff but has nevertheless been restricted to just two appearances this season.

McGinn believes Hagi deserves to play more often, having displayed an “excellent” attitude during his exile and more so because Clement does not have enough good players at his disposal.

“I remember thinking, Ianis Hagi, if he’s just a big earner, move him on, but once that transfer window shut, is he better than what you’ve got in the building? Get him in”, McGinn said on The Go Radio Football Show [19 November].

“We are not aware how he behaved throughout. By all accounts, he was excellent, he did well in the B team games. So it feels like if he now comes into the picture, the guy is playing at a good level in international football.

“For me, Rangers do not have enough good players for him not to be heavily involved up to this next January window.”

Ianis Hagi must be ‘heavily involved’ for Rangers

It notably took pressure from other players and the Rangers board for Clement to reintegrate Hagi into the squad.

The Romania international also had to waive a wage-rise clause in his contract to return to the team [Daily Record] and his attitude during the whole standoff cannot be faulted.

McGinn is not wrong in saying that the Gers must play the attacker more often, especially since Clement is under immense pressure at Ibrox.

The Belgian tactician has remained incredibly loyal to the likes of Cyriel Dessers and James Tavernier despite the team falling nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen but continues to take a strict stance on Hagi.

If Hagi does not feature in Clement’s plans for the future, he can sanction a sale in January. However, it does not make sense to not use the former Genk star while he is at the club.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Romania coach Mircea Lucescu has publicly advised the player to find a new club to save his career [Digi Sport].
