Rangers appointing Nils Koppen as their new technical director was “completely unnecessary”, Stevie Clifford has said.
Koppen joined the Gers earlier this year as head of recruitment after spending time at PSV as a scout and has seen his influence at Ibrox grow.

Speaking on The Rangers Review [21 November], Clifford of Four Lads isn’t too pleased with Koppen’s promotion within the hierarchy at the Bears.
“It’s completely unnecessary. A year ago, Nils Koppen was a scout at PSV. Now he’s the technical director at Rangers,” he said.
“He went from a scout at PSV to head of our recruitment. Now, within a couple of months, he’s now a technical director in charge of all sorts of facets at the club that I’m not sure he’s got any experience in.
“I think it’s unnecessary. Why we’re doing this before a CEO and chairman comes in, I’m really not sure. It seems like it’s all a little backwards.”
Rangers show lack of ambition with Nils Koppen appointment
Rangers are in limbo at the moment after the departures of James Bisgrove and John Bennett, who still haven’t been replaced in months.
With John Gilligan taking interim charge of the Gers, things have only gone downhill again, and the announcement of the £17.2 million losses in the recent accounts on 29 October has only increased the anxiousness amongst the Ibrox faithful.
It’s not a surprise to see the Light Blues appointing people from within, considering they might not have the funds to go out and find a fresh face.
With the CEO position also vacant, the Bears will have to make a significant investment in the near future.
While Koppen might seem like an obvious choice for the hierarchy, Rangers fans are rightfully disappointed in the Belgian who oversaw the signings in the previous transfer window.
Time will tell if this was a mistake, but right now, that isn’t a luxury that Koppen or Rangers have.
