Confirmed: Clement excludes exit-linked Rangers star from CL squad, 2 others are in

Philippe Clement has left Todd Cantwell out of his Champions League qualifying squad to face Dynamo Kyiv, according the official UEFA website.

According to the European governing body on 2 August the exit-linked English midfielder has been excluded from the group registered to face the Ukrainian side as there is no sign on the list, after the Ibrox boss confirmed during preseason he has asked to leave.

Clement did however didn’t rule out a u-turn when he admitted the door remains open for Cantwell to rejoin the side in future if he changes his mind [Sky Sports Scotland, 29 July].

Fellow senior stars who have been heavily linked with their own departures during the transfer window, James Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers, are also included in the squad, along with new signing Robin Propper.

Only recently captain Tavernier was expected to be on the move imminently after Trabzonspor returned with an improved bid [Rangers Review, 23 July].

Vice-captain Connor Goldson has instead beaten him to the Ibrox exit and been sold to Aris Limassol but it is starting to look more and more like the record-breaking goalscorer at right-back is set to stay.

Similarly for Dessers, the inability to land a new number one striker appears to suggest the Nigerian international will also remain in place despite extensive interest reported across Europe and in Saudi Arabia [Rangers Review, 3 July].

Cantwell also has interest [Scottish Sun, 24 July] and those club’s will know beyond doubt that the ex-Norwich City man is available after Clement’s decision to make it very public.

Unlimited changes are permitted to be made before the next round if Rangers make it through [Daily Record, 2 August] so the inclusion of Dessers, Tavernier and others who have been linked to exits is not confirmation they will stay.

But it does indicate that moves are not close, certainly unless replacements can be sourced to quickly fill gaps that are left behind as Propper did after Goldson’s exit.
