Confirmed: Rangers receive bid as senior ace leaves squad

Philippe Clement has confirmed that Rangers have received a concrete offer for Connor Goldson to leave Ibrox this summer.

The Light Blues boss explained via Rangers TV on Wednesday (24 July) ahead of the pre-season clash with Birmingham City that the English defender had left the squad before kick-off at St Andrew’s.

Goldson will now speak with the club to agree a deal, but Clement did not reveal which team had made a bid for the 32-year-old’s signature.

Reports have suggested that the centre-back has been left out of the squad for the clash with Birmingham to put the finishing touches on a move to Aris Limassol [Scottish Sun, 24 July].

It has felt almost inevitable for some time that Goldson was coming to the end of his time in Glasgow with speculation swirling around the defender’s situation long before the end of the Scottish Premiership season.

Alongside captain James Tavernier, there has been an expectation that both Englishmen would be sold when the right offer was received. It may have taken a bit longer than initially expected, but it finally seems set to happen.

While there will always be some fans who suggest both players have been unfairly treated over the last couple of months, it does feel as though this current Rangers squad could do with freshening up.

Even if he hadn’t left to complete a move away, Goldson had clearly fallen down the pecking order under Clement towards the end of last season and it wouldn’t have benefited anyone to have him sitting on the bench this term.

Hopefully, any money earned from his sale will be reinvested back into incoming transfers.
