Confirmed: Vitalii Mykolenko injury update emerges after potential Everton blow

Ukraine head coach Serhiy Rebrov has given a positive update on Everton defender Vitalii Mykolenko after an ankle injury on international duty.

Mykolenko suffered a recurrence of the ankle ligament damage he picked up at Goodison Park in the Merseyside Derby win while defending a corner in Ukraine’s 4-0 victory over Moldova on 11 June [X].

This looked to have ended his chances of playing at EURO2024, but Rebrov has delivered the latest after a scan on the issue.

In quotes reported by Liverpool World, Rebrov said: “Mykolenko has had an MRI scan already and will have another scan tomorrow.

“We will see what happens, but I feel a lot calmer now from the initial incident.”

Vitalii Mykolenko injury update hits Everton

Having just concluded his second full campaign at Goodison Park, there’s no doubt that Mykolenko is the number one choice on the left side of the defence.

28 Premier League appearances last season would have been more if not for injury, and the Ukrainian’s woes on this front – compounded by the incident on 11 June – could see the Blues looking for cover in his position.

Everton Vitalii Mykolenko
Vitalii Mykolenko was Everton’s first-choice left-back under Sean Dyche last season.

Everton’s biggest problem is a lack of available resources to fund a transfer of sufficient quality, and Dyche seems more likely to offer Ashley Young, who can play at left-back but is right-footed, a new contract [Liverpool World].

Another player capable of filling this role is Ben Godfrey, but reports have linked him with a move away from Goodison Park [talkSPORT].

A transfer for a player like Godfrey – or even the big-money moves mooted for Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite – would free up funds for Everton to spend on an alternative to Mykolenko, but it remains to be seen if the Toffees’ hand will be forced by his latest injury setback.

In other Everton news, a £94.2billion update has emerged as the Toffees’ takeover saga undergoes yet another twist.
