Rio Ferdinand has named the four players Manchester United should definitely sell in the summer transfer window and admits there are questions marks hanging over the futures of Marcus Rashford as well as Casemiro.

The Red Devils endured a miserable Premier League campaign last season but a surprise victory over Manchester City ensured their year ended with a significant silver lining.

After courting the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank, United’s key decision makers have finally settled on rewarding Erik ten Hag with a third season at the helm.

With the uncertainty surrounding who would manage the team next term now put to bed, United can press ahead with their summer transfer plans with a measure of certainty and conviction.

Early indications suggest that, having missed out on Champions League qualification, United will be armed with a meagre budget that will only be boosted through player sales.

Asked who he would keep and who he would let go by MailSport, Ferdinand conceded he would sanction the departures of four players, including defensive stalwart Harry Maguire and experienced midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The United legend, meanwhile, deliberated over the decisions that need to be made over Antony and Jadon Sancho, but ultimately decided their futures should lie away from Old Trafford.

‘On the basis of this season’s performances I’d probably let him go,’ said Ferdinand when asked for his verdict on the Brazil international who scored just one Premier League goal last season.

On Sancho, who spent a reputation enhancing six month on loan at Borussia Dortmund, he added: ‘I think he needs a new start I’d let him go.’

Ferdinand sat on the fence when it came to Rashford’s situation with the 26-year-old at something of a career crossroads.

He said: ‘Interesting one. I think I’d need to talk to Rahsford and just find out where his head’s at and what he wants to do.

‘What’s the reason for the downturn in performances? If I get the right answer I keep him, if I don’t like what I’m hearing I’d let him go.’

Ferdinand was more definitive on the future of Casemiro whose form deteriorated alarmingly over the course of the last 12 months following a bright start to his United career.

He added: ‘I’d keep for the experience and hope he has a better season than last season.’
