Keith Wyness: Man United's transfer plan is 'mind-boggling'

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the “mind-boggling” power vacuum at Man United could dent their transfer plans.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted United should have found a way to bring Dan Ashworth to the club in time for the summer window.

INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are embarking on their first transfer window since taking control of footballing business at Old Trafford earlier this year.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (17 June) that Man United are planning to submit a new offer for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite after seeing a bid of £35million plus add-ons rejected.

Sources have also told Football Insider (19 June) that United have also held talks over a deal to sign Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee – who has a £33.8million release clause.

Ashworth agreed terms to become the new sporting director at Old Trafford in February and he was placed on gardening leave by Newcastle shortly after.

Man United ‘power vacuum’ could dent transfer plans, says Wyness

Wyness claimed there are “big questions” over who is leading the Red Devils’ transfer strategy.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Without the lynchpin of Dan Ashworth, who they made all this public hoo-hah about, they’re right in the thick of it without their main guy.

“That is just mind-boggling to me. Man United wanted to pay £3million, whereas Newcastle want £15million.

“It’s not the biggest sum in Premier League football – there must have been a way to break this deadlock.

“He’s the key player. It now brings into question who is making the decisions, and whether there is a strategy for the summer in terms of transfer business.

“That’s the big question. You’ve got to worry if it is someone like Brailsford or Ratcliffe.

“There’s a power vacuum at Man United. INEOS certainly haven’t made a great start, that’s for sure.”

In other news, Man United “confident” of securing marquee signing after new talks.
