Keith Wyness: Everton face devastating new blow

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club face another points deduction for the 2024-25 campaign, even with Dan Friedkin set to take over.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – hopes the Premier League will reconsider punishment if the Toffees turn the corner after Friedkin’s buyout.

The Friedkin Group is closing in on a takeover at Everton with multiple sources claiming they have been granted an exclusivity agreement by current owner Farhad Moshiri.

Sean Dyche’s side were deducted eight points for two breaches of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2023-24 campaign, and still face an outstanding hearing.

Everton are also under pressure to avoid punishment for breaching PSR for the 2023-24 campaign with their accounts set to roll over on 30 June.

Everton still face points deduction despite Friedkin takeover, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the Merseysiders could become a “showcase” for the Premier League if Friedkin’s takeover banishes their financial issues.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Friedkin can’t do much about the historical PSR.

“But going forward, he can make sure it is a thing of the past.

“We go into this third hearing about the interest payments for the new stadium, and that’s one thing which has to be tidied up. We could still get a points deduction, even after the takeover.

“Hopefully the Premier League, if these charges come around, will see that this is now a club which isn’t in trouble, a club which isn’t punching above their weight.

“It could become a bit of a showcase in terms of how Premier League clubs can get through issues and resolve them.”
