'I Suspect...' - Stefan Borson shares intriguing verdict on Aston Villa legal threat

Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris will not pursue legal action against Profit and Sustainability Rules as the chances of success are “slim to non-existent”.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Villa will have no success against PSR as clubs have complied with the regulations for over a decade.

As reported by The Telegraph, Villa owner Sawiris has warned that the club could take legal action against the Premier League’s financial rules.

Villa are facing a firesale of first-team stars this summer to raise funds and avoid a points deduction next season.

Top-flight clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling-three year period and Villa reported losses of £119million in 2022-23.

Aston Villa legal threat against PSR could be bluff

Borson believes that Sawiris is making the point that Villa are unhappy with PSR but doubts that the club will take legal action.

“The problem that Villa and Sawiris have got is that everybody has complied with the PSR rules for a decade,” Borson told Football Insider.

“I think the chances of being able to unwind them at this stage are slim to non-existent.

“So I suspect that there won’t be any legal challenge and that he’s just making the point that he and Villa are unhappy with them.

“But it was foreseeable that teams like Villa would suffer under a PSR regime like this because it was bound to cap what ambitious clubs could do to get themselves into the Champions League on a regular basis.“
