talkSPORT pundit tells Everton exit-linked ace wants summer transfer to PL rival live on air

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite will “want to go to Manchester United” during the summer transfer window, according to Darren Bent.

The 21-year-old enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season at Goodison Park under Sean Dyche, but his form is understood to have attracted the interest of the Red Devils ahead of the summer window [Sky Sports News, 29 May].

Although the English international is believed to be happy to remain on Merseyside, talkSPORT pundit Bent has suggested that he will be keen to make the move to one of the world’s “biggest clubs”.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday (13 June, 17:12) he said: “Him being a young player, he’s got time on his hands but of course, he’s going to want to go to Manchester United.

“You’re talking about arguably one of the biggest, if not the biggest clubs in the world. But he’s going to have to be patient because unless they change these laws or do something with them, you could start to see players start signing smaller contracts and then going somewhere on a free.

“Because it is going to come to a point where you can’t keep spending £100million, £150million on a player. For Branthwaite, all he can do is get his head down and keep playing.

“He looks like and people I know that know him say he’s a good guy, he’s got his head in the right place and if he doesn’t get the move he will still crack on with Everton if he doesn’t get the move.”

Will Everton sell Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United during the summer transfer window?

While Everton supporters will be hoping that Bent is barking up the wrong tree, there is some substance in what he is saying, especially because of the recent off-the-field turmoil at Goodison in the last few years.

If Branthwaite was handed the chance to move to Old Trafford, he would likely be keen to test himself higher up the Premier League and on better wages, but that doesn’t mean that a move will happen this summer.

The Toffees are standing by their valuation and there has been no suggestion they are willing to budge between now and the end of the summer. Ultimately, it is down to United whether or not they pay the fee needed to get the deal done.

As Bent suggests, Branthwaite is a good guy and it is clear that he won’t try and force a move this summer. Even if he has to be an Everton player for another year, he will get that big-money move sooner rather than later.
