Keith Wyness verdict: Everton takeover now certain to collapse

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed a 777 Partners takeover revival is now “a real long shot” despite their investment at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the US-based group will have a “seat at the table” in any future negotiations after providing the club with around £200million in loans.

Everton confirmed on Saturday (1 June) that the agreement between the club and 777 Partners for a full takeover has expired.

The Toffees revealed they are now “assessing all options” as they look for a new owner.

777 agreed a takeover deal with Farhad Moshiri in September 2023 but failed to satisfy Premier League conditions – meaning top-flight chiefs would not sign off on the agreement.

777 reviving Everton deal is a ‘long shot’ – but they will play a part in takeover, says Wyness

Wyness claimed a potential revival of the deal is a “long shot” with the Miami investors in a “heap of trouble” with their other ventures worldwide.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I can’t say that I’m surprised, to be honest.

“It was well-telegraphed that 777 were in a heap of trouble, which would’ve led to great difficulty in raising money from new funders.

“It does seem that they’ve come to the end of the road in terms of the opportunity at Everton.

“Never say never, however, because they’ve got £200m of investment in the company.

“But for them to complete the requirements set by the Premier League to take over, I think that’s now a real long shot.

“They will still be at the table and have respect as they’ve got £200m in the club, which is a lot of money.

“I don’t expect 777 to come back, but they’ll be part of any solution going forward. They’ll have a seat at the table.”
