Rangers star John Souttar impressed the Scottish media after a “sure-footed” performance against Croatia on Saturday (12 October).

Souttar was given a 7/10 by The Scotsman in their player ratings (12 October) in the wake of Scotland’s 2-1 loss in Zagreb, with his display described as “a fine effort” marked by classy distribution.

The Edinburgh Evening News also gave a 7/10 rating, highlighting the “crucial intervention” Souttar made to keep Scotland in the game at 2-1 in an overall “comfortable” display.

Despite only awarding the defender a 6/10 rating, The Herald also praised Souttar’s performance, noting that the 28-year-old “threw his body on the line” and almost saved the day before the winning goal.

Rangers man John Souttar stakes permanent Scotland claim

Not many would doubt Souttar’s ability to be a regular starter for both club and country, given he’s started and played every single one of the Gers’ 13 matches in all competitions this season.

Only Jack Butland is in the same boat for Philippe Clement’s side, and Souttar carrying his strong club form onto the international stage will be a positive for those at both Ibrox and Hampden Park.

Scotland may be without the likes of Scott McKenna, Jack Hendry and Liam Cooper at present, but none of that trio are playing as often or as well for one of the biggest domestic clubs in the world.

Souttar’s display against Croatia was not perfect – missing a close-range header which would have drawn Scotland level – but still showed he can be an invaluable asset for Steve Clarke’s side.

Should he keep his place in the XI, and deservedly so, for Scotland’s next match against Portugal on 15 October, Souttar’s credentials can rise even further by keeping a lid on Cristiano Ronaldo and co.

In other Rangers news, Hugh Keevins has warned that a “crisis” could loom after what happened behind closed doors this week.
