Crystal Palace react to Everton transfer development - report

Crystal Palace have put a hefty price tag on Marc Guehi after noting the Everton valuation of Jarrad Branthwaite, according to The Telegraph.

The paper reported on their website on 17 June that Palace are trying to secure a new deal with the centre-back, who started for England the night before in the 1-0 win over Serbia, but will not entertain bids below £65million if he asks to leaves when returning from the Euros.

That decision comes as the Toffees have put a £70m asking price on Branthwaite, who narrowly missed out on the final Three Lions squad, and at Selhurst Park they value their man in a similar bracket.

Everton have so far rejected a low offer from Manchester United who want to sign Branthwaite in a cut-price deal [Mirror, 14 June].

So with Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reporting on 17 June that Guehi is one of the alternative options at Old Trafford it will come as another blow to Sir Jim Ratcliffe if Palace have decided to follow the Toffees’ lead.

Ratcliffe’s attempts to sign the Everton star on the cheap has already been given short shrift at Goodison Park and been heavily criticised elsewhere.

So if he had an eye on doing so with Guehi instead it looks like he will be met with a similar response by the Eagles.

Quality English centre-backs are always going to be pricey, and the Palace man likely did himself no harm with his performance in Germany, in a role that Branthwaite would be have been disappointed to miss out on.

It can’t be ruled out that either of the defenders do move on this summer but it appears both of their clubs know they have valuable assets on their hands and they are going to hold out for what they are worth.

That might make it impossible for Manchester United to get hold of them unless they make some significant sales, and with profit and sustainability more of a consideration than ever before across the Premier League, after a pair of points deductions at Goodison Park and another one at Nottingham Forest, spending power of most clubs isn’t what it was until the current accounting period ends.

Everton have more pressures in that regard than most but appear not to be under pressure to sell cheaply before 30 June when it comes to Branthwaite, although it is thought they would like to get a deal done to sell Amadou Onana to address that issue through a different route [The Times, 15 June].

In other Everton news, rival buyers are still interested in a takeover deal amid the claim that Dan Friedkin talks could collapse.
