Tottenham will pursue a “big money” move for Ivan Toney this summer ahead of Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, according to Alan Hutton.

Ange Postecoglou is eager to add to his frontline during the summer transfer window with Brentford and England forward Toney understood to be one name on the Lilywhites’ and West Ham United’s agenda [Football Transfers, 6 May].

However, former Spurs defender Ledly King has earmarked Irish international Ferguson as a potential option this summer, suggesting he could be a cheaper alternative to the other options linked with the move [talkSPORT, 10 June].

Although Hutton admits the Brighton star has the potential to grow into an excellent Premier League centre-forward, he believes a more experienced star like Toney would be the better option for Daniel Levy.

“It just depends on if they want a ready-made striker,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“If you want somebody who is ready-made who is going to come in right now and affect your team at this moment in time then you have to pay for that.

“That’s when we’re talking about Toney and these kinds of guys for big money, or someone like Ferguson who has definitely got the ability he’s shown that and he’s scored goals and is only going to get better.

“He’s young, he’s hungry to learn so there is a lot good so there’s a lot of good that comes with that, but is he going to come in and play week in and week out and score the goals that you need?

So it really depends on the process and what the likes of Levy, Ange and the recruitment team are looking for at this moment in time.

“If they want to compete, I think Ferguson can do it but he’s still young, he’s still learning, he’s still going to improve where I just feel if they went and bought that big hitter at this moment in time, it would really elevate them to the next level.”

Tottenham to sign Brighton star Evan Ferguson in summer transfer push under Daniel Levy?

A new number nine has been a priority for Spurs ever since Harry Kane left last summer and while Richarlison and Son Heung-min impressed centrally last term, neither have that cutting edge the England captain possesses.

In time, there is no doubt that Ferguson could become that sort of clinical finisher, but at this moment it doesn’t feel like the Irish international has done enough to warrant Spurs paying the fee needed to sign him.

On the other hand, Toney has quickly become one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-forwards.

If the Lilywhites can find the cash to bring him to North London this summer, they should be doing everything they can to get the deal over the line.
